Doctors in Berlin are reporting that they cured a man of AIDS by giving him transplanted blood stem cells from a person naturally resistant to the virus.

If that sounds crazy, it is. The procedure involves wiping out the patient’s immune system, including bone marrow, and using blood cells that HIV cannot attack.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/14/health/14hiv.html

With the economic hardship, companies like Men’s Wearhouse and Tahari are reporting an upswing in suit sales, particularly for those classic navy or gray pinstripe styles they classify as “interview suits.”

It’s pretty clear what outfits guys need going for interviews, but for the ladies it isn’t so clear. The pantsuit, skirt suit or no suit? The answer of course, is to wear what is perfectly appropriate for the position and culture of the company you are interviewing for. Make sure you wear classic colours, but don’t look too uniform. The bag you carry is key. Pack a lint roller. The right heels will help you get the job.

That’s so much to think about, I think my head would explode.

Suppose you had a household with two cars, and each car needs to be driven 10,000 miles per year. One car consumes 34 MPG, and the other car consumes 18 MPG. Since gas is expensive, you want to replace one car. Because of utility constraints, you have two choices:

    * Replace the 34 MPG car with a 50 MPG car — a 16 MPG improvement
* Replace the 18 MPG car with a 28 MPG car — a 10 MPG improvement

Which car replacement would save you the most gas?

It has also helped the human race survive innumerable conference calls and airplane trips. If solitaire is not the most important computer program of all time, it is at least in the top two, along with Minesweeper.
