Town Hall: What Should Toronto Do About its Garbage?
Alphabet City is calling on students, activists, researchers, and concerned citizens of every stripe to come to MaRS and help us answer this most critical question for the city. The Town Hall will be facilitated be a team of MBA students from the Net Impact club (devoted to corporate social responsibility) at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and will be connected live to the larger community through an on-site blog operated by Robert Ouellette’s Reading Toronto (www.readingt.readingcities.com) . MaRS; admission: free.
Talk Like A Pirate Day - September 19 Every year I tell you, every year I remember to check what day TLAPD is right after it’s over. This year was no exception… maybe 3 days, and when I did I just started quietly cursing to myself sitting at my desk at work.
EVERY YEAR!!
Event Listing Websites - Toronto On the Toronto wiki page, a listing of the various websites with Toronto event listings.
Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival Since we’re talking about Toronto film festivals, this one is Nov 15-19. The lineup isn’t going to be released until October 23rd.
Planet In Focus The International Environmental Film and Video Festival runs from Nov. 1-5, 2006. The energy nut in me is compelled to see the video about radioactive waste in Port Hope and sinophile Chris commands me to learn about the rapid urban growth in Shanghai.
Competitive Era Fails to Shrink Electric Bills - New York Times David Cay Johnston examines how 10 years of a competitive electricity market in the US has failed to bring lower prices to consumers.
Ontario has been deregulated for about 4 years now, and prices have been on the rise ever since. The culprit: increasing demand is outpacing new generators. It’s somewhat comforting to hear that other places are as screwed up as Ontario.
I’ve been accused of running the most complicated fundraising drive for taking part in the United Way CN Tower Climb. I didn’t think it was so complicated, I was just trying to make it more effective - you get something from me in return for sponsoring me.
But Mel got me thinking. I wonder what the most complicated fundraising drive would look like. Maybe I’d ask my friends to pawn off valuable and place the proceeds in monkey markets, maybe an income trust I’d set up. Capital gains would be reinvested and dividends could be used as an annuity which would cover my minimum pledge costs. Looks like I’m going to have to consult a financial advisor…
Long story short: help people in Toronto who need the United Way, and pledge at least $1 (although $20 is nicer!).
TheStar.com - Don’t pity Scarborough — visit it
When crime occurs west of Victoria Park, two Scarborough councillors complained to city council last week, the media pinpoint the location at Parliament and Dundas Sts. or the Annex. But a shooting at Lawrence Ave. and Pharmacy Ave. isn’t at Wexford — not when Scarborough will suffice. Via Matt.
