winwhatyouwant.ca a scam?

ehMac.ca - New contest
BTW, that Apple contest website I mentioned may or may not be a scam. The original link just forwards to Apple’s Higher Ed page. The problem seemed to be Apple marketing didn’t let other channels know that the campaign was Apple sanctioned. Weird.

Jin, Koalas and Smiley Chicken

As part of the Dim Sum: Contemporary Chinese Festival at Harbourfront last weekend there were a couple free concerts on the CIBC Stage. This is the very same stage where Moxy Fruvous played.

First up at around 8PM was Jin the MC. He’s the Chinese guy who was a five-time 106 and Park Freestyle Friday Champ. Jin was featured in a December 2004 NYT Magazine article, which explains his roots and why he won all those freestyles.

Jin’s not a great rapper, but he’s better than any other Chinese rapper I’ve had the unfortune of hearing. He loves hip hop and he guy just wants to be taken seriously. Too bad people are never going to look past that skin.

The hour long concert was totally jokes. About 100 Jin “fans” came out and cheered and sung along at the base of the stage. The rest of the audience were parents and 10 year old kids. Jin’s biggest fan got some love and got to sing and dance on stage, and he said it was the best day of his life. “Connie *touched* Jin ^-^”

A Jin Quicktime (10MB).

Kid Koala on the otherhand was an experience. The dude is a mixmaster. He’s put together scratch and mix sets that are flawlessly compiled and performed. For the first 30 straight minutes, he didn’t stop moving - spinning, scratching, mixing, beat juggling and swapping out records on FOUR turntables. The hour and a half show was seriously amazing and all the miniclips I took does not do a Koala show justice. He is a must-see live.

Kid Koala brought together a whack-load of people. Way more than Feist at Canada Day. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever been to a concert with a group this big.

The night ended with a trip to Congee Wong, where my I was met by this freaky morsel of smiling chicken. I couldn’t eat him, he looked so happy.

I also stumbled upon this art piece at Harbourfront. There was a little rock at the bottom with a puzzle on it. I think I’m supposed to figure out what are at those global coordinates and fill in the blank in the URL.

I don’t know why I’ve never seen this before - now you must all watch and be mesmerized. But Walrus on drums = pure gold.

Ok, forget trying to get people to buy Macs and iPods. Win a few for free!

The O Factor

The O Factor - Was Owen Wilson the key to the Wes Anderson phenomenon?
The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou was the first Wes Anderson film in which Owen Wilson didn’t share the writing chores. What if Owen Wilson, America’s resident goofy roué with the broken nose and the lazy nasal drawl, was the rudder keeping USS Anderson on course, steering its captain away from solipsism and ironic overload?”

New iBooks today!

05_07_new-ibook.jpg

Wow, let the Mac squealing begin.

I’ve been excitingly awaiting an update to the iBook all summer - since I sold my bennybook to my sister, who took him all the way to China. And today after having over-speculated and been tightly following all my Apple blogs the news finally came through.

Today is the best day to buy a new Mac, specifically the 12″ iBook.

* Base RAM is doubled to 512 MB.
* Bluetooth joins Airport (wireless) as being included
* Hard Disk gets a 10GB boost to 40GB, and built-to-order upgrades are now cheaper
* A speed boost to 1.33 MHz
* Two finger trackpad scrolling
* New drop sensor protects your hard drives

These things alone will save me at least $260 (all prices Canadian) before taxes. And let’s not forget that new iBooks ship with Tiger, the newest Mac operating system which will make you wonder why you ever put up with Windows.

And if you buy your Mac and an iPod before September 24th (and your’e a student), you’ll get a MIR for $225, the cost of a iPod Mini. I bought a 20 GB iPod with colour screen (the screen is so damn crisp, and photo scrolling is frankly amazing), which I’ve sold, lowering my net cost on my iBook. Bonus still, your student discount will earn you $50 off the base config, plus upgrades are a tad cheaper as well.

Seriously though, I just don’t think I can handle using my Windows desktop anymore. They become so quickly obsolete, but my two year old 800MHz bennybook is still chugging on strong, and can multitask way better than my 2.4GHz which sometimes makes me wait a minute to alt-tab to a new program.

I miss starting any program with just 3 or 4 keystrokes in Quicksilver. I miss iPhoto, Expose, Genie effect, Pages and Keynote, bouncing icons, quick application switching, dead easy PDF export and viewing, and my favorite freeware: Graphing Calculator. I want widgets and spotlight. OSX come back to me!
